 News-Letter Volume 2, May ‘07

Dear friends,

Signs of springtime are all around us. It’s time to prep our lawns and flower gardens for those fantastic summer parties and barbeques.  Whether you book a TSS party to be held in your living room, family room, on the deck, on the patio or under the evening stars – we enjoy putting on a fun presentation for you.  Need an excuse to throw a party?  Have a TSS party and I will teach you, your friends & family how to make fantastic cocktails as well as the simple steps to make your own beer and wine.  TSS offers the best products for the home bar and entertaining at home.  I can get your party off to a fun start – call me today!

“Bottle Night” - A Free class on making beer and Wine.

We started the night with Margaritas – why not?  Once we were warmed up, we got started by learning Step #6 of the easy 6 step process of making beer at home.  Step 6 is bottling the beer – so we bottled 2 ½ cases of the American Amber Ale that we have been working on.

Before we actually bottle the beer it is very important to make sure that the bottles are cleaned and sanitized.

Shown here to the left is a “Jet Bottle Washer” which is hooked up to any sink with an adapter.  Both products can be found in my catalog and are a must have for the home brewer.  Hot water will blast away any debris in the bottles and then the bottles are put through the dish washer with no soap/detergent.  The heat alone in the dishwasher is enough to sanitize the bottles.  Soap reduces the surface tension and will not allow for a good head on the beer.

We “racked” (transferred) our beer from the Carboy Bottle (Secondary Fermenter) back into the primary fermenting bucket to get the nice clear beer away from the sediment that had settled in the bottom of the Carboy bottle. During this step we also primed the beer with corn sugar so that the beer will be carbonated by the yeast after it is capped.  Once back in the primary fermenting bucket and primed we filled each beer bottle using the attached bottle filler then caped the beers.  Now all we do is wait 14 days and the beer is ready to serve.

After bottling our beer we shifted gears and got to working on our wine.  This batch of Pinot Noir was ready for labels and foil caps.  Here to the left you can see Bob Orchard setting up a bit of a production line while using a hair dryer to put the enotherms (foil caps) on the wine bottles for a professional finished look.  Not only was it simple, but it was fun.  Soon, I will take pride in serving the wine that I made myself, to my friends an family.  You can do it too – it’s easy and I will show you how – for free!

Nino learned how to bottle beer and to label and foil bottled wine.  We had a good time and look forward to the upcoming free classes!

John Christie knows how easy it is and is enjoying the benefits – he just made 30 bottles of Pinot Grigio - just in time for Memorial Day weekend.  Make sure you ask to swap a few bottles with him – you can contact him through our swap club. (Our brew Hauler is pictured above – a real back saver as the 23 liters of wine can get quite heavy)

Cinco De Mayo was a good time – my family and friends liked the home made wine enough to make 8 bottles of my Pinot Noir disappear into thin air. J

Boy, that’s a lot of wine and typically I would have been out a $ bundle if it were commercial store bought wine.  8 bottles of Pinot Noir could have easily run me over to $200, but with home made wine (~$65 to make 30  750 ml bottles, it cost me about ~$25)
